Holiday Drinking: Christmas, Part 1

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, this time of year is filled with parties. And friends. And drinking. Hopefully all at the same time! Here are two crowd-pleasing recipes for the holidays...
English Christmas Punch
Ingredients
- 1-750 mL bottle each of dark rum and dry red wine
- 3 cups strong tea
- 1 lb superfine sugar
- juice of 1 large orange and 1 lemon
Directions
- Heat (but do not boil) the wine, tea, lemon and orange juices in saucepan. Pour into heat proof punch bowl.
- Fill a large ladle with the sugar, and saturate with rum. Add remaining sugar to punch bowl.
- Ignite the rum and sugar, and pour it into the punch. Stir well and exstinguish the flames.
- Add remaining rum to the punch and stir. Serve in white wine glasses.
Not Your Nana's Nog
Ingredients
- 1 cup simple syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water)
- 10 egg whites
- 5 egg yolks
- 1 cup Creole Shrub orange liqueur
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups spiced rum
- whole nutmeg and orange zest, for garnish
Directions
- Make simple syrup by combining sugar and water in saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolved. Allow to cool.
- With whisk or mixer, beat egg whites in large bowl until soft peaks form.
- Add egg yolks, cream, orange liqueur, and 5 oz simple syrup. Beat until smooth.
- Stir in rum and 2 cups of rum.
- Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and orange zest.
