Behind the Bar... "Happy Hour"
February 12, 2012
Ever wonder where the concept of Happy Hour began? I started my research by attending as many Happy Hours as I could. While a fun way to spend the latter part of many afternoons, it did not lead to many answers. But here's the skinny...
- Those Navy boys! In the 1920s, "Happy Hour" was the time for scheduled amusements on board, such as boxing and wrestling bouts. Sweaty men make me (Heather, not Jim) thirsty!
- During Prohibition, you obviously couldn't drink in restaurants So, you went to a speakeasy BEFORE dinner and got your drink on at a "Happy Hour" (much less conspicuous than "Cocktail Hour").
- Everyone is doing it! By the 1960s, the "Happy Hour" had become a common term, and developed into a marketing device used by restaurants and bars to bring in people during the slow times. Usually, there is a discount on drinks, or food, or both!
