Tipsy's Tips: Garnishes, How to Choose the Right One

July 22, 2012

Most of the time, a recipe will give you an idea or two about which garnish to use. But sometimes, you just aren't using a recipe. You can choose a garnish by the liquor or by the mixer, and there are some easy guidelines to follow.

Liquors: If a flavored liquor is used, try using the flavor as a guide to the garnish. (i.e., peach schnapps= peach!)

Mixers

  • Lime can be used with cranberry juice, club soda and tonic water.
  • Lemon can used with cola products or with lemonade (duh).
  • Orange should be used with orange and tropical fruit juices.
  • Cherry can be used with sour mixes or fruity drinks.

Now, there are a few drinks you don't mess with. A mojito needs mint and lime, and a Bloody Mary needs celery. But others, you have some options. A Martini can be garnished with olives, fruit, and even onion!

You can probably figure it out. But, if you are nervous, it is easy to check a recipe to see what other people use. It wouldn't do to put a slice of orange on a Bloody Mary, after all. Now that you know what to pick, how do you proceed? Tune in next week for "The Right Stuff."
