Tipsy's Tips: Garnishes, "Location, Location, Location"

September 9, 2012

[Ed.-Yes, we are finally finishing the series. Stop bugging me already.]

You know which garnish to chose, have chosen it, and made it look pretty... Now what do you DO with it? Well, now you get to elevate your standard cocktail to an amazing cocktail!

Boat- a toothpick with garnish that rests on the rim. Try spearing the bottom of an orange wheel, then a cherry, then the top of the orange wheel, and then place it against the rim. This is commonly used with frothy drinks.

Flag- one or more garnishes pierced together on a toothpick and then stuck on the rim of the glass, using the most solid garnish (pineapple, orange, strawberry, etc.).

Rim Garnish:

  1. Spread the garnish (salt, sugar, chocolate shavings, cookie crumbs, etc) in a small dish.
  2. Rub the edge of the glass with something wet, such as a lemon wedge or cherry.
  3. Roll edge of glass through the garnish until coated, or simply place glass upside down into the garnish and rotate.

Twists and Spirals- drop them into the glass, before OR after adding the drink.

Toothpicks- carefully spear the cherry/onion/olive onto the toothpick and rest against the rim of the glass. You can even try doing more than one! Using a pretty toothpick though.

Wedges and Wheels- carefully slide them onto the rim of the glass.

Well. That about wraps it up for Garnishes. You should have amazing cocktails that look like a million bucks. And, if you don't get it... then USE A FREAKING RECIPE. That is all. Thank you, and good luck.
