Behind the Bar... "Last Call"
The term "last call" refers to the announcement indicating the last opportunity to order an alcoholic beverage. Some bars ring a bell, others flash lights, and still others actually turn on the lights. You've probably heard the bartender yell, "Last call!" before. But why is there a last call?
Regulations. It's just another example of government getting between a drunk and his fifth whiskey of the night... Last Call can be a good thing. In urban areas, it cuts down on late-night noise, and alcohol-related crime. At least that's the claim.
And when is it? Well, there are so many factors to consider. In which state are you drinking? Check your own state, but many are 1 or 2 AM, although Arizona can sell liquor 24/7! Realize that municipalities can further regulate that time, and certain zones can impact it further. And, keep in mind that some businesses stop selling 30 minutes prior to the last call time.
Now get out there before "Last Call" and be sure to call a cab.
