Behind the Bar... "Bottoms Up!"

January 22, 2012

Ever wonder where modern drinking customs and phrases come from? We've done the research for you! You're welcome!

  • In the 18th-19th centuries, press-gangs visited taverns and dropped the King's shilling into your pint of ale. If the coin was undetected by the time you reached the bottom of your glass, the gang would claim that you had accepted the King's shilling, and... uh-oh. You were in the King's navy! This led to the use of glass-bottom tankards. "Bottoms up" reminded you to check before drinking!
  • A modern use: to celebrate a new round of drinks, as in, "Hey, dude! Another round of beer! Bottoms up!"
  • Another modern use: the position your glass is in when you drain your glass, as in, "Dude, he just went bottoms up!"
  • And a final modern use: to drink up, as in, "Dude, will you just drink it already?"
